Web Design School

School of Web design?

A recent tweet from SitePoint spawned this post. It was a question that was posted to SitePoint’s forum by one of its members: HOW DO I LEARN WEB DESIGN?

It got me thinking of a time when I was wearing those similar shoes: wondering what would be the ‘proper’ way to go about improving my web design skills, frantically searching for schools with the adequate curriculum and the ‘right’ tuition fees, making sure that I was taught the proper material and I don’t break the bank in the process. The following thots are based on my experience.

Few schools offer courses that are solely focused on Web-design; reasonably-priced and realistically structured. About half of the schools on that list would be Community Colleges, the other half either have you taking government or accounting as one of your courses or their tuition fee is enough to chase away your dreams.

I honestly wonder why that is the situation, how come more schools don’t have Web Design or Development programs that run between 6 to 9 months; 1 year, tops. Anything longer than that would seem redundant, because the field of study: the Net is developing at a very fast pace, especially in this age of Social Media.

In responding to the above-mentioned question, most people suggested online tutorials and books. This settles very well with me because that was the route I took and am still taking ‘cos keeping abreast of latest developments in Web technology should be a part of every serious Web professionals’ mantra so, everyday is a day in ‘school’. Don’t let nobody fool you.

Another vital technique to ‘learning or mastering’ Web Design is constant practice. Just like that age-old cliche goes: Practice makes Perfect. This maxim applies to all aspects of life as we know it. Remember how many times you practiced parallel parking before you aced that driving test? :)

In answering that question, I would suggest that the individual spend sometime figuring if he/she feels more comfortable designing or developing for the Web – doing both could be very taxing, after that decision has been made, prepare to spend time on the net doing a lot of research so as to figure out what your source of knowledge would be and DO NOT FORGET TO PRACTICE continuously when you have acquired enough expertise.

Here are some of the Web sites that come highly recommended and could prove effective:

Both schools on this list are in the Texas area, because I am familiar with them.

Maybe, someday there will be a Web Design school with the ‘right’ structure and tuition. A school that would also be in the vanguard of Web standards.

Peace, Love and Blessings,

Reme…
